Michelangelo and Raphael are considered two of the greatest masters of the human body in the history of art. Over three days, you will learn renaissance figure drawing and the history of this celebrated genre. Immerse yourself in the glory of the arts of Renaissance Rome to practically learn how these artists drew their legendary depictions from life. Experiment how Renaissance artists used ancient masterpieces from the Roman empire, including the Apollo Belvedere, The Laocoon, and the Torso Belvedere as ideals for their projects.
You will learn the step-by-step methodology and be shown vital stages of traditional figure drawing used by Raphael and Michelangelo. The Old Masters would have worked from life and following this tradition, you will be taught how to draw in graphite using a professional male nude model over three days. You will have the opportunity to learn from our classically trained tutor about anatomy and be given the time to analyse, construct and master the human body through tonal gradation.
You can attend this art masterclass both at our central London art studio or remotely online via our live online teaching platform.
All of our masterclasses can be learnt in our central London art studio at Sunny Art Centre or remotely online via our live online teaching platform. The live online art tuition will follow the same structure as our on-site sessions. You can, therefore, have live interactive art lessons with our expert art tutors remotely, wherever you are.
Masterclass Structure:
- Day one: Morning - Lecture on the history of figure drawing with an emphasis on Renaissance figure studies, followed by the introduction of drawing materials and set-up. Afternoon - Explanation and demonstration of light theory, value, how to start a figure drawing using the envelope and block-in technique.
- Day two: Morning - Explanation and demonstration about anatomy, planes, and drawing the block concept. Students practice block-concept exercise. Afternoon – Explanation and demonstration shading techniques, how to draw the shadow pattern, mass-in the shadow pattern and model form. Students draw the shadow pattern, mass-in the shadows and begin to model form
- Day three: Students spend the whole drawing modelling form to a finished level.
By the end of the art course, you will have learnt about light theory, value, edges, perspective, anatomy, planes and modelling form. Through this art masterclass, you will have acquired the necessary skills and vital stages of life drawing.
The art-historical background will unlock knowledge that you can use to understand Renaissance figure drawings and paintings in museums throughout the world.
