CHINESE PAINTING COURSE

Our Chinese painting classes are held on a one to one basis. Each class typically begins with a demonstration of a particular technique of a traditional subject matter (such as swallows, bamboo, wild orchids, plum blossoms, pandas, horses, peonies, etc.). Our Chinese painting students will then produce at least one developed painting of that subject by the end of the class.

During your first class, our teacher will provide an introduction covering everything you will need to get started with Chinese painting.  This will include an explanation of the different materials, a demonstration of how you should hold the different brush, and how to produce different basic strokes. 

As the Chinese painting classes are arranged on a one to one basis, you will be able to arrange a bespoke timetable and your starting date by booking mutually convenient time slots directly with us.

Onsite & Online Virtual Art Courses

We offer one-to-one lessons in-house at Sunny Art Centre in central London. Alternatively, you can book art lessons with our Live Online Art Tuition via our interactive teaching platform. You can, therefore, have live interactive private 1-1 art lessons with our expert art tutors remotely, wherever you are.

Our art tutors are available for 1-1 live remote teaching:

Mon-Fri: between 10am - 6pm (last class beginning at 4pm)
Sat-Sun: between 10am - 5pm (last class beginning at 3pm)

How are the live online courses structured?

You will receive structured lessons with reference images, concept and technique documents, short demonstration videos, plus live demos from your tutor and critiques.

Live Demonstration 

Demonstration with traditional drawing/painting medium techniques: Our tutor will set up the camera to live record the demonstration during the art lesson. 

Demonstration with Photoshop :

  1. Screenshot student’s work in progress 
  2. The tutor will screen share their computer screen live with students 
  3. Correct students' work live with Photoshop; this software provides an assortment of traditional drawing and painting brush effects, allowing tutors to paint/draw digitally with academic drawing /painting techniques.

Suitability

Our Chinese painting classes are suitable for those who would like to learn traditional and/or contemporary Chinese painting techniques. The classes are informal and are suitable for students of all levels (including professional artists who would like to try a new technique). Consistent with the philosophies behind Chinese painting, our aim is to make the Chinese painting and calligraphy classes fun and sociable so that you can unwind after your busy week.

Chinese Meticulous Painting (Gongbi)

If you are an individual striving for detailed likenesses, accuracy with lines and colours, and realistic depictions, our Meticulous Chinese Painting class is ideal for you. These classes are for anyone interested in learning this technique, even if you do not have any prior knowledge in Chinese painting or culture. Our course promises a thorough understanding of both the background and technical aspects of meticulous Chinese painting. Step by step, our students will be able to master their brushstroke, ink laying, outlining, composition, calligraphy, and even seal making for this highly visual Chinese Art.

Chinese Ink Wash Painting (Shui-mo) / Chinese Brush Painting

If you enjoy a more freestyle or impressionistic way of expressing yourself, our ink wash painting (Literati painting) may be for you. Students will be given guidance on how to convey and capture the liveliness, fragrance, and spirit of an object or surrounding space with simple yet skilled brush movement and ink flow. Our masters will display the magic of Chinese ink through its tonality, as well as holding appreciation sessions and discussions on the beauty of this unique, freehand, watercolour tradition originating in East Asia.
