Over three days, you will learn Degas’s impressionist pastel drawing techniques, and the history of the celebrated artist plus other famous pastel works by Degas’s contemporaries. Degas is famous for his pastel drawings and during this masterclass, our expert tutor will teach the colours he used, the layering technique through hatching and his genius compositional skills. Degas was a master of pastel drawing, and this is a unique opportunity to learn the vital stages of his method through speed drawing and more extended study of his works and still life. All of our masterclasses can be learnt in our central London art studio at Sunny Art Centre or remotely online via our live online teaching platform. The live online art tuition will follow the same structure as our on-site sessions. You can, therefore, have live interactive art lessons with our expert art tutors remotely, wherever you are.
Masterclass Structure:
- Day one: Morning - Lecture on Degas, his pastel works and other contemporary impressionist pastel work, followed by the introduction of materials and set-up. Afternoon - Explanation and demonstration of light theory, value and colour theory. Students will practice these concepts through still life of coloured boxes.
- Day two: Morning - Explanation and demonstration of perspective, composition and Degas’s approach using the hatching techniques through quick demonstrations. Student practice quick and short studies from Degas's works. Afternoon – students will make a more extensive study from one of Degas’s pastel masterpieces.
- Day three: Explanation and demonstration of how to draw a still life composition using Degas's method. For the rest of the day, students will practice this technique through timed sessions of drawing from different still life compositions around the studio.
By the end of the art course, you will have learnt about light theory, value, edges, perspective, colour theory and the hatching, layered pastel technique. Through this art masterclass, you will learn how to produce quick, short and medium pastel drawings of Degas’s masterpieces and still life compositions.
