Dutch Flower Oil Painting Technique

3 Days Master Art Course → Book Online Now

Have you ever wondered how Dutch Renaissance artists could paint such hyper-realistic still life/botanical art? Over three days, you will learn the 17th Century, Dutch flower oil painting technique and the history behind this historical method through this dedicated art masterclass.   The Flemish approach is a highly refined and precise multi-layer method that achieves a high level of realism. This unique masterclass is your opportunity to learn and practice this method to create the mesmerising polished effect of Dutch still life.

Dutch painters such as Ambrosius the Elder, Bosschaert and Paulus Theodorus van Brussel used this approach to immortalise many exotic and fashionable floral compositions of this time. The historical background will give you the opportunity of learning the meaning behind some of the most popular objects used by Flemish artists for their still lives. Armed with this knowledge, you can crack the meaning of celebrated compositions of the Dutch Golden Age.

You can attend this art masterclass both at our central London art studio or remotely online via our live online teaching platform.

All of our masterclasses can be learnt in our central London art studio at Sunny Art Centre or remotely online via our live online teaching platform. The live online art tuition will follow the same structure as our on-site sessions. You can, therefore, have live interactive art lessons with our expert art tutors remotely, wherever you are.

Masterclass Structure:

  • Day one: Morning - Introduction of painting materials and set-up. Explanation and demonstration of light theory, values, edges, and how to start the master copy and draw a precise line drawing of the flowers through understanding their structure. Students practice value scales exercises, edges exercise and draw a line drawing of a section of Dutch Master floral composition. Afternoon- demonstration and explanation of how to paint an underpainting known as open grisaille with only brunt umber paint. Students will finish their line drawing and proceed to paint an underpainting.
  • Day two: Morning - Lecture on the history of Dutch flower paintings and artists who favoured this approach, followed by a demonstration and explanation of the next painting layer called the dead layer. You will learn to form paint and achieve the correct values of the flowers. Afternoon – Students paint the second layer of their master copy.
  • Day three: Morning - Explanation and demonstration of the final layers using limited yet vibrant colours to form paint flowers. You will also learn a technique called glazing. Students will paint the last layer of colour for the rest of the day.

By the end of the art course, you will have learnt about light theory, value edges, colour theory, brushes for specific techniques, specific mediums for each layer and mixing colour.  You will have learnt the traditional Dutch indirect method that requires a layered technique involving a precise drawing, a precise underpainting, form painting and glazing.

Making master copies is the best way to learn a new method, and this art masterclass will provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to create precise and vibrant flowers.
